This is an amazing opportunity to understand the origins of what Mexico is nowadays.
Declared a World Heritage Site, Monte Albán was one of the most important cities in ancient Mesoamerica. During its peak, the city of Monte Albán housed a population of 35,000 people.
MONTE ALBÁN is the largest archaeological site in Oaxaca. The Great Plaza covers an area of more than three hectares (7.5-8 acres). Including the structures adjacent to the plaza, the complex covers 20 hectares (43 acres) at the summit of a hill which rises 400 meters (1320 feet) from the valley floor. Nearly all of the buildings, public and residential, are oriented to the cardinal directions.
The ancient capital of the Zapotecs, Monte Albán, was occupied for more than 1300 years from 500 B.C. to 800 A.D.
Monte Albán is Oaxaca´s best example of an urban center with a large central plaza. The plaza must have served as the principal market place and the focus of administrative and ceremonial activities of the community. The Main Plaza is spacious and accessible from various sectors of the city. Large carved stone monuments attest to its public nature..
